Back to the Subject of GMO’s and 4 Steps to Avoid Them!

IMG_0066

I took a little break from the Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) discussion and wanted to point out  couple of great resources and information on them.  I just listened to a talk by Jeffery Smith, one of the proponents against GMO’s.  In that talk he discusses how the FDA in 1994 determined that there was no testing needed to bring a GMO to market.  Jeffery has written 2 books on GMO’s and release a movie on the subject: Seeds of Deception and Genetic Roulette!  The movie has the same title and is available to download for rent for $3 from this site geneticroulettemovie.com.  It is highly informational and a little scary.  He presents the science behind why these crops are having such devastating effects.

So how do you avoid GMO’s in your diet:

  1. eat organic foods.  Certified organic foods can not intentionally contain GMO’s
  2. look for the non-GMO label.  Many healthy foods do not contain GMO’s and will willingly display that they don’t have them in their foods.  As of yet the US doesn’t require foods to be label that they contain GMO’s
  3. avoid at risk products, that include soybeans, cottonseed, canola oil, corn, Hawaii papaya, some zucchini and yellow squash and sugar from sugar beets.  Sugar:  If a non-organic product made in North American lists “sugar” as an ingredient (and NOT pure cane sugar), then it is almost certainly a combination of sugar from both sugar cane and GM sugar beets.
Dairy: Products may be from cows injected with GM bovine growth hormone. Look for labels stating No rBGH, rBST, or artificial hormones.
  4. learn the list, buy products listed on this shopping guide or download the app ShopNoGMO guide for free from the iTunes store and go to this site to find out what store brands are genetically modified.

Checkout the nongmoproject.org to find out about labeling and The Institute for Responsible Technology, both these site provide tons of information!

People have been asking me why we are seeing more and more allergies and food tolerances.  I believe the use of GMO’s since the early 90’s is part of that problem. The science is pointing to GMO’s in certain food are creating allergies in other foods that may not be modified.  It is really scary what big ag and business is doing to us with these products, many designed to work in tandem with the near lethal dose of herbicides they use to keep weeds down.  Do the research, talk to people who have done it and be aware of what you are eating!
